After quite a few sessions after the predators, I fancied a change, so headed back to my local river for a spot of chub fishing. I usually do a roving session for them, but just fancied a trying a few swims which I have had success, in previous seasons. I started at my first swim, and baited up with some cubes of cheesepaste. Within minutes, I was into my first fish of the day which felt quite a lump, but unfortunately I managed to loose it in a snag, and it threw the hook. Not phased by this, I carried on and had a couple of gentle taps on the tip, and it pulled round, I had my first fish on the bank.
Happy with the result I placed it into the keep net. I gave it another hour or so, but the bites seemed to dry up. I moved to another couple of swims, but had no luck. Feeling a bit deflated, I moved to another swim I have caught in, which is on a deep bend, opposite a large tree and some overhanging hedges. I threw out some cheese paste freebies, and started to get some interest straight away. The tip twitched a few times, then it pulled round, I was into my first fish. After placing the chub into the keep net, I rebaited and threw so more freebies out. Within minutes, the tip pulled round again, and I was into my second fish. This continued for most of the session in the same swim, then I had the finickiest of bites which only pulled the tip round slightly. I struck into the fish, and was expecting to be small fish. I was wrong. the fish shot off and was going crazy, after a few minutes the mouth opened and the biggest chub I have ever seen graced my net.
After catching these four, I tried different parts of the swim, but was unsuccessful, so I moved to another swim near my car, and just before it got dark, I had another pull round and banked another fine chub.
The day ended with six fish, and was by far, my best chub session on the River Cam for a very long time!
Great work!
I’m really interested in catching some chub this winter and am struggling to think of anywhere to go. Where was this at?
Hi Mark,
It depends where you are, but this particular fish came out of the River Cam which is relatively local to me.
The middle and upper reaches of the Great Ouse, and the River Nene are also worth a shot.
Hope this helps!
