Had a free day over the weekend, so I spent it fishing back on my favourite drain, the Middle Level. Got there at the crack of dawn and was greeted by mist rising off the drain and a barn owl working the far bank.
I visited a stretch which is very rarely visited by anglers, and well known for it’s bream and zander population.
I setup a feeder rod, my usual method for a drain of this size and a float rod setup, as I fancied a go after the rudd and roach, which were rolling in front of me, some of which looked a good size.
After throwing a few orange sized balls of ground bait, just off the middle of the drain, the bites were slow to start on a standard feeder, so I changed over to a cage feeder.
Within minutes of making the change, the bites started to roll in. I started off with a few roach and perch, then some good sized skimmers started to show, including some small proper bream.
During a quite spell in between bites, I had a go with the float rod, and had some average roach and rudd.
Overall it was a cracking day, and wish I had my keep net with me, as it would of been rather full, once I had finished.
The fens have been good to me so far, and I am hoping my luck continues through the rest of the season!
