Thursday March 10th – Byrons Pool/Cambridge (River Cam)

Normally this year I spend my last few sessions going after the fenland pike, but this time I fancied change.

The constant rain we had a couple of nights ago, basically caused the rivers to flood, but I was determined not to be beaten. I ventured to Byron’s, pool and found a lovely stretch of the cam which I had never fished before. Very hard work and only had one bite on this stretch all morning. Just couldn’t get my bait to hold bottom. I eventually gave up and moved to Cambridge, to try and find some slack water.

River Cam – Cambridge

I decided to try Cambridge, as the river was basically unfishable in the Byron’s Pool area. I tried the Newnham stretch and had the same issues, even when I did find some slack water, I still struggled to catch. I then had a wander, and found a lovely mill pool on one of the back waters. Lovely and calm and could see chub topping everywhere. As usual I wasn’t prepared for this. This would of been perfect for a feeder rod setup. Typical, had all the kit, but no ground bait or maggots! as all I intended to do was spend the day roving. anyway I blanked.

Looking at heading back to this lovely mill pool at some point during the new season. This time will use the ground bait feeder rod approach .
