Had a go on the River Lark today for the bream and tench. This was the first time I had fished it in the summer for a couple of years now, and was very happy with the outcome. The river was in fine form today. Shoals of roach and rudd, jack pike attacking the dragon flies and fish topping everywhere.
I started fishing about 5am. After baiting up the area with a mix of sweet ground bait, breadcrumb, maggot and hemp. I baited the hook up with a couple of red maggots on a size 16 barbless hook, coupled to 4.4ib hook length and a medium cage feeder.
I started off with a few perch and roach, then the tip hooped round. It was a classic bream bite. Struck into the fish and landed a immaculate bream around the 4ib mark.
After a few more perch later, I had a cracking bite. Struck into the fish and felt something hefty on the other end, then the hook length gave way. Gutted and did utter a few swear words. Not sure what it was, but may have been a very large tench or maybe a small carp. Who knows?
Anyway tackled up again , and half an hour later I had a very finicky bite, then the tip rattled round. After a fantastic scrap, I banked a 5ib 2oz tench. It was a cracking fish and my PB so far this year.
I also had an eel and a few more perch then packed up about 10am.
The River Lark should definitely be your port of call, if you fancy an early morning or evening session. I certainly will be making a return visit there soon. Tight Lines!
